Mexico - January 2012

Hosted by Mitch & Mills

mexico1Our journey begins with a 5 night stay in Mexico City which is built on top of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. With a mixture of the ancient, colonial and modern the size and grandeur of the city is staggering. We will explore astonishing historical sites, awesome ancient ruins and meticulously restored colonial buildings, churches and mansions.

We will also visit Pubela, a colonial city where we will find the world famous Talavera patterned ceramics. It is also popular for its cuisine, many churches and arts and crafts.

On to Oaxaca, a land of contrast, colours, legends and traditions. We have 4 nights to explore its culture and history. We will discover its charms through the “andadores”, pedestrian streets flanked by colonial buildings, to the shady “Zocalo” for a visit to the cathedral.

We will explore the Acropolis of Monte Alban, ancient capital of Zapotecs, later inhabited by the conquering Mixtecs. The dramatic frame of the rugged Sierra Madre Mountains, spectacular views of the city and valley of Qaxaca, make Monte Alban one of the most impressive archaeological sites of the country.

Mitla “The City of the Dead” is a visual feast. Its architecture is exquisite, as are its stone mosaics, which are unique to this area.

mexico3We will base ourselves in Merida, nicknamed “the White City” for the last 5 nights. We will also get a chance to discover the treasures Uxmal and Kabah. It’s two main buildings, the Acropolis and the amazing Codz Pop Palace, are covered by masks by the Mayan Rain God ‘Chac’.

The last destination on our Mexican journey, Chichen Itza, has been named one of the new “seven wonders of the world”. It is dedicated to the worship of Kukulcan, the feathered serpent God. The most important civic and religious centre of the Mayans, it was also the capital of the Mayan Empire, destination of pilgrims from all regions of Mesoamerica, and the object of numerous studies of solar and astronomical symbolism. The majestic temples of Chichen Itza still guard the mystery of this great race.

Mexico, with its many legends and traditions will make this trip full of adventure and fascination.
